Dangerous House Plants

Whether you are a new dog owner or have had dogs for years you may not be aware that there are some common house plants and yard plants that may be dangerous, or even deadly, to have around. We all know that many dogs, especially puppies, love to chew on things. Shoes, hats, slippers, socks- if they are within reach your puppy may potentially try to play with, or chew on them. Even if you are careful about not leaving things in reach, you may not have thought of your dog or pup trying to get ahold of your plants. Before you bring your new puppy home, or even if you have had a dog for years, do a quick check around your house or yard and maybe think twice before bringing certain plants into your home.

Common houseplants that are poisonous to dogs:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Jade
  • Ivy
  • Peace Lily
  • Philodendron
  • Pathos
  • Elephant Ear
  • Asparagus Plant
  • Desert Rose
  • Sago Palm
  • Dumb Cane
  • ZZ plant
  • Corn Plant
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Bird of Paradise

If you do decide to keep these plants around your home or yard, think safety first! Keep a dog poison control kit on hand, they can be bought pre-made, and keep your veterinarian’s phone number handy just in case. Before you bring a new plant into your home, always do your research to make sure there won’t be any surprising consequences!
